The program provides a fun and competitive environment for 12 to 16 year old racers while testing their skills against their peers at a provincial level.
The U14 program is intended to progress young skiers from the "Learn to Train" to the "Learn to Race" stages of skill development. Our qualified coaches develop ski specific physical and mental skills to help our athletes develop in to confident racers. The coaches accomplish this by teaching athletes how to train, set personal goals, the importance of commitment and sportsmanship, equipment maintenance and the rules of ski racing.
Our free-skiing sessions enhance the racing skills by using varying terrain and all mountain conditions. This balanced training approach engages the athletes and ignites a lifelong passion for the sport.
Our program begins in September with a dryland program, consisting of mid-week aerobic training and hikes / mountain bike ride on the weekends. It then progresses to an on snow program, usually mid November, that includes two nights at WinSport and all day Saturday and Sunday at a local mountain resorts.
While we are based at Sunshine and do the majority of our training there, we also take advantage of the excellent training facilities at several of the nearby resorts.
There will be some optional Friday training. However, the coaches understand that there is a balance between school and skiing; and that school takes priority.
Typically our U14 athletes will hold an annual Sunshine and WinSport ski pass. Nakiska pass is optional for training days.
The U16 program is intended to refine the skills required to perform at the Learn to Race stage and to prepare the athlete for more intensive training and competition at the junior level. Our qualified coaches accomplish this by continuing to develop ski specific physical and mental skills plus advance the athlete’s technical skills and help them to refine their tactical proficiencies.
Purpose based free-skiing creates additional opportunities for skill development and fuels their passion for having fun on skis with their teammates.
